Diagnosing poor running conditions on a 1978 Suzuki GS750

I love the site… really informative! About a year ago I purchased my first bike, a 1978 Suzuki GS750, I travel a lot for work so I dont’ get to ride it as nearly as much as I would like… anyway, lately I have been having troubles with the bike running… it starts up just fine and will idle with the choke on, but once i apply throttle to the bike it immeadiately stalls. It might run for a bit and seem like it will be okay, but then it starts sputtering again when I apply throttle. I’m very new to motorcylces and from what I’ve researched it seems like a carb problem, but I’m not sure… I was wondering if you have any advice on how to diagnose poor running conditions. I saw that you were planning on writing an article on that, but not sure where to find it. Thanks for any help you can provide.

This is definitely a carb problem. Open up your carbs and give them a thorough cleaning. Pay particular attention to the pilot jets – but everything should be clean.

If you aren’t using your bike much, you should keep Stabil in the gas to keep it from gumming up the carbs as badly when they go unused. It’s also advisable to drain the carb bowls if the bike will be sitting more than a couple weeks. This will ensure they stay nice and dry – provided your petcock works properly.

Enjoy the bike – the Suzuki GS750’s are excellent machines.
